The way people are talking about golf fitness today, you would think it was a new fad! Gary Player did a great job of introducing fitness for golfers around 30 years ago, but it seems like it's only just taking off..... and in a big way.
For any golfer that wants to be the best at their game, (which is pretty much every golfer), then they should be serious about starting a golf fitness program. We all know that Tiger Woods has been serious about his golf fitness since he turned 'pro' in 1996. He is living proof that elite golf athletes do exist, and if you want to play your game like Tiger Woods, you need to train like an athlete too.
Did you watch the Masters recently? You can see now that most Professional Golfers are working out, they are looking toned and in top-form (with the exception of Monty and Mickleson)! Zach Johnson has a pretty serious fitness workout regime and what more can I say...he won! So what kind of workouts and exercises are they all performing? Well I can tell you that they are all incorporating the following basic elements into their golf fitness program:
- Flexibility Exercises - These exercises will enhance the range of motion in your joints giving you a more fluid swing and will also reduce the chances of injury.
- Stability Exercises - You will create an absolute solid stable base from which you will be able to hit those powerful shots off the tee and not forgetting the stability required for putting.
- Strength Exercises - Will give you the endurance and stamina you need for the course and the ability to hold your body in extreme positions that are required of the golf swing.
- Power Exercises - What every golfer wants......to add distance to your drives. Just in case you need it, the power exercises will also help you with those awkward shots out of the rough!
The one and only thing that fit golfers have in common for sure is that they all seek advice from a professional golf fitness trainer. After all, you wouldn't go to the dentist with a bad knee would you?
